A rejection is a processing issue that needs the correct follow-up. Start with the notice, your requesting agency and the original operator; do not treat it as the same thing as a disqualifying result.
Identify the problem before booking again
Keep the notice with your applicant copy. Determine whether it describes image quality, missing information or another issue. A status marked delayed is not the same as a rejection notice.
Contact the original operator
Tell the operator that you have a rejection or resubmission instruction. Ask which documents and original transaction details it needs, whether it can handle the resubmission, and what charges apply. Get a time when a technician will be available.
Keep the requesting agency involved
DOJ’s agency guidance describes situations where reprinting uses the original ATI. Follow the instructions for your notice rather than starting an unrelated new application. If the original request omitted a required check or contains incorrect agency information, the agency needs to help resolve that problem.
Confirm resubmission charges
Do not assume every repeat visit is free, or that every repeat visit requires a new full government fee. Ask what the operator’s policy covers and how it applies to the reason stated on your notice. Keep the new receipt with the original paperwork.
A few useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Does a rejection mean I failed the background check?
Not necessarily. Fingerprint image quality can cause rejection. Read the notice and ask the requesting agency about your specific next step.
Can I go to a different operator for a rescan?
Confirm the required process with the requesting agency and original operator first. Ask how the original transaction is to be referenced and what you will be charged.
Will clearer prints guarantee an immediate result?
No. A successful new capture does not determine the rest of government processing or the agency’s decision timeline.
